Lives and works in Coimbra, where he is pursuing his PhD in Contemporary Art at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra. He holds a degree in Art Education (1999) and a Master’s degree in Arts (2006) from UNICAMP, Brazil.
Marcelo Moscheta is a practice-based visual artist and researcher with deep conceptual references. His research focuses on the primordial relationships between men and the environment, on how human interventions arise from the acts of wandering and walking. Heterochronies, displacement, territory, landscape and memory are his main interests.
His most recent research investigates the cultural boundaries born on ancient territories, the megalithic occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, knowledge of vernacular crafts and how humanity’s nomadic and migrant condition has shaped the inhabited landscape.
He has received several awards and research grants, including The Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (2017), The Drawing Centre Open Sessions Programme (2015), FUNARTE Stimulus Grant (2014), Marc Ferrez Photography Award (2012) and the 1st Pipa Award (2010). In 2013, he is featured in the publication Vitamin D2, Phaidon Publishing House, an anthology of contemporary drawing. In Portugal, he was a finalist for the Sovereign Portuguese Art Prize in 2025 and 2024.
The artist develops a research practice strongly linked to artistic residencies as a way of getting closer to new territories and landscapes. Among them, the Associação Pó de Vir a Ser in Évora (2025) and the Encontros de Primavera in Trás-os-Montes (2018) stand out. In 2016, he was at Flora ars+natura in Colombia and at Labverde in the Amazon rainforest. In 2014, he was a resident in Canada for the Vancouver Biennale and in Uruguay for the 2nd Montevideo Biennial.
