What defines a territory? a landscape? a country?
The EAST installation addresses issues relating to the constitution of the Uruguayan territory, its geography and history, strongly marked by the presence of the river which gives its name to the country.
The limits set by the river are transposed into the Church, "remaking" the territory of the Republic starting from its most westerly point - the left bank of the River Uruguay, the Uruguayan part within the territory (about 500 km).
Ten rocks were collected on the Uruguayan side of the river. Placed on a pillar of white paraffin. These telluric chunks of the country "float" in the nave of the church and trickle down to the right delimiting the reach and extent that these rocks may have, like the DNA of the landscape, that replicates and shapes according to the pass of the years and of the ages. The collections date back from thousands of years before the idea of the country.

The rock as the file of history, the mineral as the identity of the place. Paraffin instead becomes another "landscape", walking east, makes itself as a wandering territory, opaque, a mix between the condition of the ground minutes after an earthquake that revolved the surface and geological eras erosion and landslides - past and present living in eternal transformation. Paraffin as possessing the life of its eternal flame.
And in this connection of opposites (rock /paraffin, hardness / softness, etc ..) the only possible relation between the two materials is their mineral origin. This origin leads to a prehistoric time shaped on the white walls of paraffin as affluents of a imaginary river that always run to the East inhabiting the so present empty landscape of the pampas.
East is a geographic coordinate. But it is also a place, bounded in this case by the river that draws a country.
And in this connection of opposites (rock /paraffin, hardness / softness, etc ..) the only possible relation between the two materials is their mineral origin. This origin leads to a prehistoric time shaped on the white walls of paraffin as affluents of a imaginary river that always run to the East inhabiting the so present empty landscape of the pampas.

A instalação ORIENTE, trata de questões relativas à constituição do território uruguaio, sua geografia e história, marcadas fortemente pela presença do Rio que dá nome ao país. Os limites definidos pelo rio são transpostos para o interior da Igreja, “refazendo” o território da República Oriental partindo do seu ponto mais ocidental - a margem esquerda do Rio Uruguay, a parte dentro do território Uruguaio (aproximadamente 500 km).
Dez rochas foram coletadas na margem uruguaia do rio. Colocadas sobre um pilar de parafina branca, esses pedaços telúricos do país “flutuam” na nave da igreja e escorrem para a direita delimitando o alcance e a extensão que aquelas rochas podem ter, como se fossem o DNA da paisagem, que se replica e se amolda conforme o passar dos anos e das eras.
As coletas datam de milhares de anos antes da idéia de país.

A rocha como o arquivo dessa história, o mineral como a identidade do lugar. A parafina, ao contrário, torna-se outra “paisagem”, caminhando para o leste, faz-se como um território errante, opaco, um misto entre a condição da terra minutos após um terremoto que revolveu toda a sua superfície e eras geológicas de erosões e desabamentos - passado e presente convivendo numa eterna transformação. Parafina como detentora da vida, combustível de sua chama eterna.
E nessa ligação de opostos (pedra/parafina, dureza/moleza, etc..) a única relação possível entre os dois materiais é sua origem mineral. Origem essa que nos leva a um tempo pré-histórico plasmado nas paredes brancas da parafina, como afluentes de um rio imaginário que corre sempre para o Oriente e que habitam os vazios tão presentes na paisagem dos pampas.
