Marcelo Moscheta is a walking artist. Using displays of the internal anatomy of the human ear, and related studies from the 1960s, Moscheta became interested in the coincidence of terminologies that characterize both the human auditory system and the visual construction of the landscape: Labyrinth and Rock. Thus, the artist established an expedition between the Labyrinth Cave in the Sintra mountain range and the Cliffs of Cabo da Roca, a journey he made on foot. Along the way, Moscheta collected images and audio that compose the installation occupying the Museum’s Chemical Laboratory. The observed mineral elements were drawn in graphite on schist stones - resembling fossils. A partir de peças da anatomia interna do ouvido humano, e de estudo correlatos da década de 1960, Moscheta se interessou pela coincidência das terminologias que caracterizam tanto o aparelho auditivo humano quanto a construção visual da paisagem: Labirinto e Rochedo. Assim, o artista estabeleceu uma expedição entre a Gruta do Labirinto, na serra de Sintra, e os Rochedos do Cabo da Roca, trajeto que realizou a pé. Ao longo da viagem, Moscheta colheu imagens e áudios que compõe a instalação que ocupa o Laboratório Químico do Museu. Os elementos minerais observados foram desenhados em grafite sobre pedras de xisto - que se assemelham a fósseis. Through two investigations into landscape and nature – one by a Portuguese artist in Brazil and one by a Brazilian artist in Portugal –, 'a' landscape is recognized and was operated on and is now rediscovered by man, as exemplified by wanderings of Pedro Vaz and Marcelo Moscheta, who emphasize the search for this reunion and recognition for the land and nature. An expedition through different landscapes by Pedro Vaz, which seem to have no space in time, which enhance a romantic and staged reading, about ancient routes, where the relationship between man and nature, the before and after, and the respective economic and geopolitical metamorphoses. The elements of nature, carefully selected by Marcelo Moscheta, offer us a place and space, making these contemplative elements sacred, in which the landscape is modeled, documenting and recording man's relationship with the places he passes through and the memories left over them. “Cartografia da Sombra” puts the work of these two artists in dialogue, exploring the action of walking, with or According to Ignasi de Solá-Morales*, the expression Terrain Vague means&nbsp; "An empty place without cultivation or construction, in a city or a suburb, an indeterminate space without precise boundaries. It is an apparently forgotten place where the memory of the past seems to predominate over the present,(…) The void is absence, but it is also hope, the space of the possible. The indefinite and uncertain is also the absence of limits, an almost oceanic sensation, to use one of Freud's terms, the expectation of mobility and wandering. ...The presence of power invites escape from its all-pervasive enterprise, sedentary comfort invites unprotected nomadism, urban order invites the indefinite nature of the terrain vague, the true index of the aesthetic and ethical questions raised by the issues of contemporary society" Based on postcard images, bought on flea markets around Portugal and Europe, three actions are made, following primordial rules: one cut, one fold, one addition. What could be a very restricted guideline opens itself to an incountable possibilities of rearrangments, making the series getting larger at each new combination. O que poderia ser uma diretriz muito restrita se abre para inúmeras possibilidades de rearranjos, fazendo com que a série fique maior a cada nova combinação. It's an invitation to reflect with, do with, and think with nature, as opposed to merely thinking, writing and creating about it. This exhibition assembles the works of three artists, Gabriela Albergaria, Margarida Lagarto, and Marcelo Moscheta, each of whom employs distinct methodologies to engage with nature in ways that align with this transformative approach. They share a profound commitment to reparation, mending the rifts in our relationship with the environment, and restoring its fragile balance. Whether through poetic interpretations or direct interactions, these artists engage in a profound conversation with the natural world, addressing the clouds, shadows, and trees that often remain overlooked. The rainbow, a fleeting and scientific phenomenon, continues to captivate our imagination with its magical allure. To behold a rainbow is to be in a state of perpetual attentiveness—an ongoing observation and enchantment. It requires a gaze that is finely attuned to the ephemeral, one that can identify, document, and savor the transient beauty of nature. This shared attitude of seeking and preserving the fleeting moments in the natural world unites the work of these three artists. For each of these artists, finding their own rainbows represents a deeply personal and artistic journey of reparation. It is an act of conversing with the ephemeral, of recognizing and capturing moments that might otherwise be lost in the passage of time. This endeavor is not merely an aesthetic pursuit but also a critical stance, a means of containment, a method of storytelling, or a reflection of sheer amazement. Each artist's unique approach highlights the profound connection between human beings and the environment, emphasizing our capacity to appreciate and engage with the beauty and wonder that nature offers, and, in doing so, to contribute to the reparation of our damaged relationship with the planet. This exhibition transcends traditional artistic boundaries to offer a poignant exploration of our relationship with nature and the urgent need for reparation. It serves as a reminder of our responsibility to shift our perspective and engage with the natural world in a more profound and mindful way. The works presented encourage us to find our own rainbows, to converse with the fleeting moments in nature, and to preserve, celebrate, and protect the extraordinary beauty of our planet for future generations. conversa com o mundo natural, mas não com o cantor – pode ser interpretada como uma alegoria para a nossa atual relação com a natureza. Numa época marcada por desafios ambientais e uma necessidade premente de consciência ecológica, falar com a natureza, com entidades para além do reino humano, torna-se não só relevante como imperativo. É um convite a refletir com, a fazer e pensar com a natureza, em vez de apenas pensar, escrever e criar sobre ela. Esta exposição reúne os trabalhos de três artistas, Gabriela Albergaria, Margarida Lagarto e Marcelo Moscheta, cada um dos quais emprega metodologias distintas para se relacionar com a natureza de uma forma que se alinha com esta abordagem transformadora. Partilham um profundo compromisso com a reparação, sarar as falhas na nossa relação com o ambiente e restabelecer o seu frágil equilíbrio. Quer seja através de interpretações poéticas ou de interações diretas, estes artistas estabelecem uma conversa profunda com o mundo natural, abordando as nuvens, as sombras e as árvores que muitas vezes passam despercebidas. O arco-íris, um fenómeno fugaz e científico, continua a cativar a nossa imaginação com o seu fascínio mágico. Contemplar um arco-íris é estar num estado de atenção perpétua - uma observação e um encantamento contínuos. Requer um olhar finamente sintonizado com o efémero, capaz de identificar, documentar e saborear a beleza transitória da natureza. Esta atitude de procurar e preservar os momentos fugazes do mundo natural une o trabalho destes três artistas. Para cada um deles, encontrar os seus próprios arco-íris representa uma viagem de reparação profundamente pessoal. É um ato de diálogo com o efémero, de reconhecimento e captura de momentos que, de outra forma, se poderiam perder na passagem do tempo. Este esforço não é apenas uma busca estética, mas também uma posição crítica, um grito, um método de contar histórias ou um reflexo de puro espanto. Cada uma das suas abordagem realça de diferentes formas a profunda ligação entre os seres humanos e o ambiente, enfatizando a nossa capacidade de apreciar e de nos envolvermos com o que a natureza oferece e, ao fazê-lo, de contribuir para a restabelecer a nossa relação danificada com o planeta. In a world suddenly inhabited by particles that had traveled many kilometers, flying like migratory birds that do not need to land. I imagine the immigrant boats that crossed the Mediterranean coming from the same origin as those sands. Everyone yearns hopefully for a place to start over, a deposition, a sedimentation of life, particle by particle. A traveler of the 1,200 km that separate point A from point B, once a nomad, now deposited, established. These two conical structures create a striking contrast between the untamed, preserved landscape and the marks of human intervention. Designed as shelters, the cones can provide refuge for both humans and animals. Covered in cork, they offer insulation against the cold of the night and create a unique acoustic effect, altering sound propagation when one stands between the cones' openings. Emerging from the concept of sensory suppression—in this case, diminishing the soundscape to heighten other senses—this intervention invites both humans and animals to experience the environment in a new and heightened way, fostering a deeper connection with previously unnoticed aspects of the place. The sculpture came to life after a short residency in the village of Pinhel, where the invaluable contribution of local craftsmen was instrumental. These artisans skillfully stripped the cork, built the structure, and crafted the stone walls, culminating in a geometric solid that harmonizes directly with the surrounding landscape. ______________________________________________________This project was only possible through the precious collaboration of artisans from Pinhel: Luís Guerra, Antero e Jacinto and Samir Bichara. pedraVale Carapito, Vilar Maior, Portugal2023 No topo de uma colina, dentro de uma reserva de cavalos selvagens e com vista para o castelo de Vilar Maior, encontra-se a escultura The Invisible, parte do projeto Conic Infinite. Estas duas estruturas cônicas criam um contraste marcante entre a paisagem intocada e preservada e as marcas da intervenção humana. Projetados como abrigos, os cones podem servir de refúgio tanto para humanos quanto para animais. Revestidos de cortiça, oferecem isolamento contra o frio da noite e criam um efeito acústico único, alterando a propagação do som quando se está entre as aberturas dos cones. Surgindo a partir do conceito de supressão sensorial — neste caso, a redução da paisagem sonora para intensificar outros sentidos —, esta intervenção convida humanos e animais a experimentar o ambiente de uma maneira nova e aprimorada, promovendo uma conexão mais profunda com aspectos anteriormente despercebidos do local. A escultura ganhou forma após uma breve residência na vila de Pinhel, onde a valiosa contribuição de artesãos locais foi essencial. Estes artesãos, com habilidade, descascaram a cortiça, construíram a estrutura e ergueram os muros de pedra, culminando em um sólido geométrico que dialoga diretamente com a paisagem ao seu redor. __________________________________ Este projejto só foi possível mediante a preciosa colaboração dos artesãos de Pinhel: Luís Guerra, Antero e Jacinto e Samir Bichara. The proposal is based on the lists created by Francesco Careri in his book Walkscapes – Walking as an Aesthetic Practice. These are actions and situations listed at the beginning of the book as terms increasingly present in contemporary practices related to movement, wandering, and interventions in urban and rural landscapes. Taking these "proposals" as a starting point, a game of random encounters between these words is played, resulting in phrases and poetic connections between text and image—drawings of stones recorded during the artist's walks. Thus, each drawing carries a different phrase, inviting the observer into a poetic engagement with the place represented. <img width="3144" height="2096" width_o="3144" height_o="2096" expandido e marcador de relevodimensões variadas2022/2024 Como um corpo de obras em estado de constante recriação, a série Do Discusro do Caminhar mostra-se como uma composição de desenhos feitos a grafite sobre PVC expandido preto com molduras de madeira e de tamanhos variados e acrescidos de textos aplicados com adesivos feitos com um rotulador de relevo. A proposta baseia-se nas listas criadas por Francesco Careri em seu livro “Walkscapes - o caminhar como prática estética”. São ações e situações elencadas no início do livro como vocábulos cada vez mais presentes dentro da prática contemporânea ligada ao deslocamento, à deambulação e à intervenção nas paisagens urbanas e rurais. Tendo como ponto de partida tais “propostas”, faz-se então um jogo de encontros randômicos entre essas palavras e são criadas frases e aproximações poéticas entre texto e imagem - desenhos de pedras registradas pelos percursos que o artista realiza em suas caminhadas. Assim, cada desenho carrega em si uma frase diferente e propõe ao observador uma aproximação poética com o lugar representado.
